Commack-Northport Girls Varsity Swimming vs. Half Hollow Hills-Kings Park

Commack swimmers are in a combined team with Northport again this season. They faced a combined Hills - Kings Park team again this year.

The most valuable tip I can give you for photographing swimming is to take LOTS of images. Even the best cameras’ auto focus get fooled by the splashing water. For events like the 50 yard freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay where the swimmers rarely come up for air, you’re lucky to get one frame with a face in focus.

I’m shooting with a 135mm f/1.8 prime, which I set to f/2. It gives me much cleaner images than a 70-200mm f/2.8 and, with the Sony a1, I can punch in to APS-C mode to pick up swimmers in the far lane.

Some of you may have noticed the color of the water changing from image to image. That’s not a camera or post-processing problem. There are windows in the Hills West pool and the color of the water changes based on whether it’s illuminated by window light or the warmer led’s in the ceiling.
