Commack High School Girls Varsity Soccer vs. Central Islip - Senior Day

Senior day is always fun to photograph. You get the seniors and their family members plus a game.

This was a bright, clear day but by the time the festivities got started the sun was already pretty low. The light was extremely contrasty. I had the families stand with their backs to the sun to eliminate squinting. I probably should have just brought a flash. It would have reduced the need for a lot of post-processing.

By the time the game started the sun was sinking fast. I stopped shooting before the game ended but was able to get most of it in. That’s the trade-off with 5:00pm games at this time of the year. You get nice light while it lasts but it doesn’t last long.

The senior day ceremony shots were made with a Sony a1 and a 50mm prime lens. Exposure was 1/500 sec. @ f/5.6, ISO 125. The game shots were made with the 100-400mm, 1/2000 sec. wide-open aperture, auto-ISO as usual.
