Commack High School Girls Varsity Winter Track

Headed over to Suffolk Community College to catch the first girls winter track crossover meet on Saturday.

Photographing winter track is basically like spring track but with less light. It’s the usual five-ring circus but with one less ring - no pole vault. That means you still need to keep scanning the four areas of the field for Commack athletes so you can move quickly when necessary.

At the beginning of the meet I usually hang out near the southeast corner of the track so I can get the 50m hurdles and dash as well as possibly pick up some long jumpers. I’ll keep my eye on the high jump area and be ready to move there one the warmups are over and the 50m events are over. Once I move over near the high jump I can get any runners in the longer distance events coming around that side of the track, as well as the high jumpers. At the same time, I’ll keep an eye on the shot put area for Commack throwers and be ready to run over their if I see any getting ready to throw. When the 400 starts I’ll move to the southwest corner, but only if it’s daylight; there’s a big window down there that let’s in some decent sunlight on that corner of the track. For relays, I’m back in the southeast corner to catch the baton passes. We weren’t in the relays in this meet.

I’m shooting with a Sony a1 and 135mm prime. Exposure is 1/1000 sec. @ f/2 or 1.8, auto-ISO.
