Commack High School Girls Varsity Track vs. Ward Melville

Back to the track to get the throwers I missed in the first gallery.

Shot put throwers will definitely test your camera’s autofocus tracking ability. As their body rotates they move forward and their head spins. Face/eye detect autofocus is not going to help in this situation. The camera needs to be able to track what you initially put the focus point on, which much of the time is the back of their head. Another challenge is the background which, at least here at Commack, is usually filled with baseball players in white uniforms. Take lots of images and hope you get a few without them in the frame.

Same problem with discus plus, at Commack, you have an extremely dark background. You need to dial in about 1 1/2 stops of negative exposure compensation to keep from over exposing. A new challenge is that the new cage has a white sign that is strategically located right behind your subject. The solution here is to move to one side to try to get it out of the frame but, depending on how a thrower releases, that doesn’t always work as you can see from some of the photos.

I managed to get a few shots of other athletes nearby the throwers so i’ll throw those in, no charge.
