Commack High School Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Brentwood

This gallery also has the halftime cheerleaders performance as well as the basketball game so it’s a big one.

Another win for Commack’s girls basketball team, this time against Brentwood. They’re on a roll.

The Commack cheerleaders performed at halftime and the pep band was there also. Nice to see halftime performances at a girls basketball game.

Since the stands weren’t too packed I shot the cheerleaders from the top of the bleachers. I was using a 50mm lens, which was the widest I had. I probably could have used a 35mm but I still couldn’t have gotten the whole team. Anything wider and the distortion would have looked weird. I’m almost inclined to try shooting individuals and small groups (pyramids, etc.) rather than trying to go wider.

Shooting from up high gives you the advantage of getting more faces in the photo but the downside is the bright reflection off the gym floor. It’s manageable, though. I had run into this problem once before when I got the bright idea to shoot a quarter of a basketball game from a second-level track at St. Joseph’s College. I was almost directly over the basket. The vantage point was great but the reflections were horrific. At most high school gyms you can only get up so high so the reflections aren’t that terrible.
