Commack High School Boys Winter Varsity Track

Getting a late start this season. This is my first sports gallery of the winter season so I have some catching up to do.

The scoreboard at SCCC Brentwood’s athletics center was down, much to the dismay of everyone except the photographers. That new display board is extremely bright and bathes the runners crossing the finish line with whatever color happens to be displayed at the time. That makes for a lot of extra color orrection time, so I wasn’t too sad to hear it wasn’t working.

The temperature of the house lights is pretty close to 3800K, so that’s not a bad camera setting to start at. If it’s a daytime meet you’re going to have to tweak that depending upon whether or not your subject is under a window with lots of daylight coming through. If the meet is held after dark you have much less work to do.

I’m using my usual indoor sports setting - 1/1000 sec. @ f/2 and auto-ISO with my 135mm prime lens.

The Lifetouch yearbook photographers were out in force at this meet. There had to be around five or six of them at various spots. That’s the way to do it - assign a photographer to a particular event and let them concentrate on just that one event rather than running around the floor hoping to get a few shots of everything, Of course, the downside is they’re covering six schools and I only need to cover one.
