Commack High School Boys Varsity Basketball vs. North Babylon

A nice win for the Commack boys basketball team.

For basketball I’m shooting with three prime lenses - a 50mm, which I use in the first and fourth quarters, a 135mm which I use in the second quarter, and a 20mm, for the third quarter. Using prime lenses has a few advantages over zoom lenses. I can open up my aperture wider and get cleaner shots. I miss less shots since I’m not wasting time zooming in and out. Plus, my Sony a1 allows me to assign the APS-C crop mode to the buttons on the lens so I can instantly zoom in to 150% of the lens’ focal length with the push of a button, making for easier focusing on distant shots. The 50mm lens gets me most of the action around the basket. I use the 135mm for shots of the defense at the other end of the court. The 20mm lens lets me cover the entire floor plus the bleachers for foul shots and other plays that extend across the court.

As far as camera settings go, I’m using a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec. @ f/2, auto-ISO. My white balance is locked into 3600K for the lighting in both our south and north gyms but I still need to add a little blue to the midtones to compensate for the orange light reflected off our gym floors.
