Commack High School Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Central Islip

Another win for the Commack boys basketball team, this time in an exciting game with Central Islip.

Just a quick post on adjusting your white balance. First of all, auto white balance sounds like a quick fix for color issues and, sometimes it can be, but most of the time it’s not quite good enough. In a high school gym even a custom white balance may not be perfect. Why? Well, there’s the gym floor that casts an orange tint on all the players. You may also have walls painted in the colors of your school that reflect those colors back on the players. So, auto white balance might not correct perfectly for all of this.

Then there’s the difference in color temperature measurement in different cameras. I’ve shot with two identical camera bodies that had different color temperature readouts, even when using identical Kelvin temperature settings.

The bottom line is you have to figure out the best white balance temperature adjustment for your camera. For example, even when setting a custom white balance, my camera, a Sony a1, is a bit warm and has a magenta tint. I can correct for that in camera or in post-processing. If I’m shooting indoors in a gym, I’ll generally make all my corrections in post because I know the color temperature in our gym is not consistent from end to end so I’m going to have to make some adjustments in post whether or not I try to get it right in camera.
