Commack High School Play With the Teachers Tennis Tournament for Breast Cancer
Photographed the "Play With the Teachers" tennis tournament at Commack High School. This is a big fundraiser done every year by the boys tennis team to benefit a worthy cause which, this year, was breast cancer. It's a lot of fun to photograph and I know all the players, both teachers and members of the boys tennis team, had a lot of fun also. This is probably the only time during the year that I'm allowed to photograph from inside a tennis court. Nice, because I don't have to press my lens up against the fence. It does demand some quick shooting simply because the matches are much shorter than usual. For that reason, I'm shooting from both sides of the court. I don't usually like to shoot from the north end of the court because the background is filled with cars in the parking lot, other players waiting to get on the court and spectators. Kind of distracting. But, given that the matches are over quickly you have to run around and get all the shots you can from anywhere you can. You have to take a few extra shots when shooting into the side with the cars because the high-contrast reflections off the car chrome will sometimes cause your camera's autofocus to lock on the cars rather than the players.
Also, shooting from inside the court, you need to watch out for flying tennis balls, more so coming off the teacher's racquets than the tennis team's. Just sayin'. Still, the weather was great and I managed to get shots of most of the players.
All in all, a great day. Lots of fun and they raised lots of money for a good cause.
