Commack High School Kickline
Caught the Commack High School varsity kickline at the girls basketball game against Ward Melville this week. Very talented group of dancers! This was the second dance group I photographed this season. My previous post gave an overview on my basic strategy when photographing these dance groups so I won't go through that again. This time I thought I'd take a chance and use my 10-24mm lens to see if I could get the whole group in the shot. This is an ultra-wide angle lens so there's bound to be some distortion on the edges. One of the downsides of using this lens for indoor action shots is that it has a maximum aperture of f/4. This meant that I had to lower my shutter speed to 1/250 sec. at ISO 6400. A low shutter speed like that is pushing the limit for action shots. I knew there was bound to be motion blur in a lot of the photos so I took lots of shots to get a few acceptable ones. It was an interesting experiment that produced some cool looking shots but I think I'll go back to the 16-55mm next time until I get a second body so I can shoot with both lenses.
