Commack High School Varsity Football vs Central Islip
Congratulations to the Commack varsity football team on their win over Central Islip. There's only half a game of photos in this gallery. I left a little after halftime when the rain got more annoying. Unfortunately, my Nikon 80-400 isn't weatherproof. It was worth shooting the first half in the bright overcast conditions, though. Very low contrast, so you can see into the helmets a lot better than on a sunny day. Plus you have the added bonus of being able to shoot from both ends of the field and not worry about where the sun is. Lots of action in this game; I probably got close to a full game's worth of decent shots in the time I was there. Even got a few more photos of the cheerleaders, marching band and kickline.
Sometimes it pays to follow the ball. I have a habit of shooting the QB releasing his pass then, if it looks like it's not blocked, refocusing on the intended receiver to get the catch. As you can see in photo 288, that didn't work out too well. Even though the CI QB's pass wasn't blocked it ended up in the hands of one of Commack's defensive linemen (65) a few feet away. You can see him snatch the ball in the far right of the photo. I figured something was up as I was swinging towards the receiver when I didn't see the ball in my viewfinder so I started swinging back and shooting at the same time, hence the crappy photo. Guess you can't get em' all. Hey, at least I got him running in the touchdown.
