Commack High School Boys Varsity Soccer vs. Sachem North
Congratulations to the Commack Boys Soccer team on their win over Sachem North. Quite an exciting game and a lot of fun to photograph. I use the auto-ISO feature on my camera a lot for outdoor sports, especially now that I shoot field sports with the 80-400mm, which is a variable aperture lens. I like to shoot in manual exposure mode and my settings are usually 1/1600 sec. and a wide open aperture. I used to shoot with a 70-200mm lens with a 1.4 extender. Since this was a fixed aperture lens (the aperture remained constant through the zoom range) I could select a specific ISO value on a sunny day and leave it there. Now, with the 80-400mm I set the ISO on auto. The reason is because the 80-400mm is a variable aperture lens who's minimum aperture changes as you zoom. Since I'm always shooting at the minimum aperture and using manual exposure mode (fixed aperture and shutter speed), if I set specific ISO and shutter values, the exposure would change as I zoom due to the changing aperture and I'd end up over or under exposing some shots. With auto-ISO, the ISO will change as the aperture changes when the lens is zoomed and maintain the correct exposure, even in manual exposure mode.
If your camera has this feature and you shoot with a variable aperture lens in manual exposure mode, give it a try.
