Commack High School Varsity Football vs. Sachem East
Congratulations to the Commack football team on an exciting overtime win over Sachem East.
Decent size crowd in the stands for this game, which is always nice for good backgrounds. The light varied, especially near the end of the game when it got pretty cloudy, so I stuck with Auto-ISO. For this game I was hanging out downfield quite a ways hoping to catch the running backs breaking out. I did get a few pass plays but most were in front of me which means I was shooting the backs of the players. To catch pass plays it’s much more productive to stay about 10 yards in front of the line hoping the receivers will pass you and look back for the catch so you can get their faces.
For the kickline I’ll get some shots in the v-formation then wait till they spread out. I’ll take at least one shot with their legs all the way up and another half way. The shot with the legs all the way up looks great but almost all the faces are blocked.
For cheer I’m up close with a wide lens, in this case a 10-24mm zoom in order to get the whole pyramid. Shots of the cheerleaders in action are always a challenge because they face the crowd during their routines so you have to keep one eye on them while your shooting the game and run back over when you see them turn.
The marching band is fairly straightforward; they don’t move much. I’ll get a shot of the band and kickline walking onto the field then grab shots of instrument groups while they play. Performances for the first few games are pretty short so you can’t get a lot.
That’s it for this post. Next up - girls volleyball.
