Commack High School Girls Varsity Cross Country
Great light, for the most part, for Tuesday’s girls cross country meet against Riverhead and Bay Shore.
This meet went off later than most so I had time to shoot a few frames of the girls warming up. From there I got the start as they ran across the meadow and then a few on the first bridge. I usually shoot from the far end of that bridge but this time I stayed near the top of the bridge and got the runners coming up the incline. Since I was shooting downwards I managed to eliminate the blown-out sky in the background.
After that I moved to the last bridge before the finish line. The photo gods were with me at that location. The sun was getting low and just barely lighting the pathway while keeping the background in the shadows. This makes for some dramatic lighting if you can get the runners in the right position and assuming the sun doesn’t go behind a cloud, which it did for a few shots. I try to get the runners in the open, if possible, but sometimes they’re running in a pack and blocked by other runners until they get very close to you, in which case you have to compose quickly and pray. Still, this is a great location not just because of the light but because the runners are nearing the finish and they look like they’ve run a long race - sweaty and tired.
Now if only they could get rid of those ugly traffic cones …
