Commack High School Varsity Softball vs. Longwood - Suffolk AA Championship
Congratulations to the new Suffolk AA Softball Champions Commack Cougars in a 5-2 win over Longwood.
This game was played at the Eastport-South Manor Athletics Complex which is located just slightly west of France. They have really nice fields, infield turf and outfield grass, similar to many college fields.
Apparently there’s a new Section XI rule that you need a safety helmet to photograph on the field. It would have been nice to know about this before I drove all the way out there but that’s show biz. I ended up shooting through the outfield fence, which is 200 yards on all sides (glad this was softball and not baseball). I’ve shot from outfields before but never through a fence. You can make this work by using a long lens and the widest aperture you have. Just get as close to the fence as possible without scratching your lens and try to center it in the opening in the chain link. Your images will be flatter and less sharp but you can bring much of that back in post. The only problem is that there’s not a lot of different things you can shoot from the outfield other than home plate and the rare play where players are facing you. But, when life gives you lemons …
Gotta get this post out fast. That’s it for today. Next up - the Encore Dinner Dance.
