Commack High School Varsity Softball vs. East Meadow - L.I. Championship
This game brought an end to Commack’s playoff season run but they ended the season as county champs, which is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on a great season.
So the previous game was helmet day (you couldn’t photograph on the field without a helmet) and this game was media day (you couldn’t photograph on the field unless you had press credentials but you didn’t need a helmet). I’m sure all these rules have great reasons, especially the helmet one, but it would be nice if they were posted on the Section XI website somewhere so we could either bring a helmet or decide if it’s worth the long drive or not. Sigh… Anyway, I took up my usual position behind the center field fence.
By the time this game started at 7:00 I was already up at ISO 5000 to get 1/1600 sec., not a good start to a photo session. It went downhill from there. By the end of the game I was at ISO 12,800 to get 1/250 sec. The stadium lights weren’t very bright but at least they made the difference between going home and trying for some hail-marys. As you can see from the gallery, 1/250 sec. will barely stop a person walking let alone playing softball. You get a lot of motion blur, which can be interesting for a few shots but gets old fast.
There was a very nice sunset which, unfortunately, was behind me but I did manage to get a shot of the outfielders in conference with the pink sunset as a background. I also got a shot of a strange flying machine circling above the field (hey, I gotta do something between innings). Outside of that, you could probably switch these photos out for last week’s photos and never tell the difference.
That’s it for this post and that’s it for high school sports this season. Good luck to all the seniors and I hope everyone has a great summer.
