Commack High School Varsity Baseball vs. Sachem North
Was able to photograph the first four innings of Commack’s win over Sachem North on Monday before the serious rain started.
For games later in the season once I have shots of most of the team I concentrate more on the base runners and fielders than the batters. By this time I have a least one decent shot of almost everyone hitting. That’s not to say that I ignore the batters, especially when no one’s on base, but if there’s action on the field I try to give that priority.
This was a morning game which means that the sun, what little there was, is behind me on the first base line. From there I can get batters and almost all fielders unless the opposing hitter bunts or hits short to the pitcher. I can also get pickoff attempts at first if I remember to stand back far enough. I just have to shoot around the first base coach, which is not usually a big deal.
If I didn’t think it was going to rain I would have spent most of the game near first base but I wanted to get some lefty batters so I moved to the third base line after the third inning. I was glad I did because I only had one more inning before it started raining. Commack’s third base fence is longer than the one on the first base side so you can’t get a decent shot of plays to third or short because you’re behind them. I can get the plays at first and just about anywhere else, as well as a nice view of right-handed pitchers and a way better view of plays at home plate. I did manage to get a pickoff at third base because the third baseman was nice enough to pivot around so his face was in the image.
That’s it for this post. Next up - softball. Have fun.
