The weather was miserable but the light was nice, at least for half the meet.
The sky was overcast and it started misting half way through. As annoying as this was, it could have been worse; at least there was no wind. The light was soft and flat so I used a Provia film emulation to increase contrast a bit. The overcast was pretty heavy. I started out at ISO 2500 to get a shutter speed of 1/2000 sec. and by the time the meet was ending I was up at ISO 12,800 to get 1/320 sec. You know it’s getting dark when the street lamps start coming on.
1/320 sec. is no where to be when shooting sports and the last bunch of images are understandably soft. There’s not much you can do at that point except pan and hope for the best. I thought the images looked a little more noisy than usual even for that high ISO, but then I realized a lot of it was the mist that came down heavier as the meet progressed.
I must say, though, that we lucked out. At the moment I jumped into my car after the meet was over it started raining for real and by the time I got home it was pouring buckets. Good timing, I guess.
That’s it for today. Next up - more boys lacrosse. Have fun.
