Commack High School Varsity Badminton vs. Smithtown West
Congratulations to the Commack boys and girls varsity badminton teams on their win over Smithtown West.
It seemed like a good idea …
I thought I’d shoot this match with my 100-400mm lens since, at Commack, the seven badminton courts take up the entire gym, wall-to-wall, so you have to shoot from the bleachers. You can’t get on the court. This is not necessarily a bad thing because you want to be up high or your view of the far courts will be blocked. The problem is, it’s a long way to the back courts, thus the idea to use the 100-400mm.
The problem with this idea is my 100-400mm is a variable aperture f/4.5 - 5.6 lens and that forces me to shoot at ISO 12,800 just to get 1/250 sec. shutter speed wide open. As I found out, 1/250 sec. is not going to hack it for badminton, or any other sport for that matter.
So…. a lot of these images are soft due to motion blur. There are some cool shots mixed in but not many. I think I’ll try to revisit badminton later in the season with a 1.4x teleconverter on my 50-140mm f/2.8 lens. That will give me an f/4 equivalent aperture so I can bump up the shutter speed a little faster.
