Commack High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse vs. Westhampton Beach - Scrimmage
And awaaayy we go! It’s a fairly long break between winter and spring sports seasons so I figured I’d get in some practice by catching the scrimmage between Commack and Westhampton.
There was a light overcast with the sun moving in and out at times. Even so, I set a custom white balance rather than use auto white balance. I just find it easier to adjust the white balance in post if all the photos start from the same point.
For lacrosse, like most field sports, I’m using my Fuji XT-3 with a 150-400mm lens. I’m shooting at 1/2000 sec. with a wide open aperture. If the light is constantly varying, as it was during this scrimmage, I’m using auto-ISO. This way I don’t have to worry about the sun going in and out and I can easily dial in exposure compensation, if necessary. If the light were constant, as on a cloudless or completely overcast day, I’d set the ISO manually.
I’m using continuous auto-focus with a single AF point. I like the single point AF better than zone-AF because I find that zone-AF gets fooled into focusing on nearby players even after you lock it on your subject. The only time I use zone-AF is for track events where there’s a single athlete out in the open.
These photos were finished in Capture One using a Fujifilm Provia film simulation.
Next up - a boys lacrosse game today, assuming the weather holds, which it may not. Have fun.
