Commack High School Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Central Islip - Senior Night
Another senior night win for Commack, this time the girls basketball team over Central Islip. On to the first playoff game at Copiague.
That winds up the regular winter season; next week begins the playoff season. That usually means photographing at other schools and that requires a little more prep work than shooting at your home school.
I like to arrive at away post-season games earlier than usual for a few reasons. First, I need to get through security which usually involves checking credentials, getting hand-stamped, etc. Second, I’ll scout out a place to store my stuff (jacket, camera bag, etc.) This is usually easier at colleges than at high schools, where things can get a little cramped. Third, I need to get new exposure readings for that venue. I’ll have a walk around the perimeter and see if the light is consistent enough across the court to shoot with manual exposure settings. Fourth, I need to get a custom white balance setting to make sure my colors are at least in the ballpark. Even though I’m shooting raw images, the less color correction I have to do in post, the better. And finally, if I’m also doing media coverage I’ll check in with my reporter and also with the other media to see who they’re covering. This will give me an idea where to position myself so we don’t get in each other’s way. As the post-season progresses things can get a little crowded out there.
That’s it for this post. Next up will be the first girls basketball playoff game at Copiague on Tuesday. Have fun.
