Commack High School Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Ward Melville - Suffolk Quarterfinals
Commack’s girls basketball team’s season came to a close with this game but they had a great season. I’ll miss photographing them but I’ll see a lot of them in spring sports in a few weeks.
Ward Melville high school has a huge gym with a blonde floor similar to many college gym floors. The advantage is it’s a neutral color and doesn’t cause a color cast on skin tones. They have green borders and logos on the floor but they’re not wide enough to cause color cast problems. The walls are white, which also helps keep colors accurate, but they’re really white and highly reflective so they have to be toned down a bit in post. There’s some green padding on the wall and this causes a green color cast on the floors in spots but it’s fairly easy for Capture One’s color editor tool to deal with.
Although the gym seems bright it’s only about 1/3 stop brighter than Commack’s so I was still shooting at ISO 10,000 to get 1/800 sec. @ f/2.8. Because of the gym’s size there’s lots of backstop room so I shot with the 50-140mm lens the entire game; no need for anything wider.
That’s it for this post. Next up will be the boys quarterfinals basketball game and that will be it for winter sports. Have fun.
