Commack High School Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Copiague - Playoff
Congratulations to the Commack girls basketball team on their playoff win over Copiague.
I will never complain about the lighting in the Commack gym ever again. Copiague still has vapor lamps in their gym and they’ve aged out so much they’re various shades of yellow, orange and green. So, depending on where the play is on the floor they could either be under bad light or really bad light. The good news is they’re planning to replace these lamps with new LED fixture. In fact, you can see the effects of one in some of the images where the background is blue. The bad news is, they didn’t replace them before this playoff game. You can see the effects of the lamps on some photos of the game that people have already posted to Instagram. They’re basically, well, yellow.
So…. We basically want to change this …
Into this …
This is an improvement but still not accurate color because the lamps don’t cover the full color spectrum so you can never get perfect color. Add the fact that the lamps change color as the A.C. electricity cycles every 1/60 sec. and you have a job on your hands.
Luckily, Capture One has a nifty tool called the Color Editor that enables you to create a mask based on a range of colors and then modify the colors within the mask. This sometimes takes more than one mask per image depending on the color cast on the background and foreground, which sometimes differ substantially. But, the point is, you can get the photos looking somewhat more normal. If any of you are using Capture One and would like details on how to do this send me an email.
That’s it for today’s post. Gotta photograph another playoff game. Have fun.
