Commack High School Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Patchogue-Medford
Congratulations to the Commack girls basketball team on their win over Pat-Med.
Most sports photographers that photograph high school sports complain about the quantity and quality of light in your typical high school gym. There’s not much you can do about the quantity of light except make sure all the lights are turned on but, truth be told, the quality of light can vary in a given gym.
In our gym the light in the center of the floor is quite flat, producing almost contrast-less images that need a lot of post-processing to make them look interesting. As you get nearer the edges of the floor, however, the light falls off and the black padding that lines our walls acts like a flag (photography flag, that is) and causes some shadows to fall in those areas. It comes in handy for photographing a throw-in or basket attempts from the edges, producing more dramatic light and decent shadows. So… sometimes it pays to hand out near the edges of the court.
That’s it for this post. Have fun!
