Commack High School Varsity Football vs. Sachem East
Congratulations to the Commack varsity football team on their 12-0 win over Sachem East. This one was played under cool, overcast skies, which was great for photos. That is, until it started raining, which it wasn’t supposed to do. Yeah, that’s what those little white specks are.
I always keep an Optech Rainsleeve rain cover for my camera in a plastic bag in my photo vest and today it came in handy. They work great, they’re compact and they’re cheap. At two for seven bucks you can’t go wrong. I used to have a more elaborate rain cover sytem from a company that has since discontinued them; they were bulit like a tank but very expensive and a huge pain in the ass to put on. You had to really consider whether it was worth the effort to wrestle with it or just take your chances without it. The Optechs go on quickly and, while nowhere near as well built, they do the job.
For this game, I hung out a lot in the end zone. I’ve been doing that more often since I got the Fuji 100-400mm lens. It’s effectively a 600mm on the long end due to the camera’s APS-C sensor so I can pretty much cover 2/3 of the field easily. I do try to mix it up with some shots from the sideline, especially to get the coaches and timeouts.
This gallery is larger than most because, with football, you also cover cheerleaders, marching band an kickline. Have fun.
