Commack High School Encore Dinner Dance
The dinner dance for Encore, Commack High School's music booster club, is always a fun event to photograph. This year the kids were really into it right from the start and that made my job a lot easier.
This event was held at The Hamlet Golf and Country Club, who did a great job, as always, of getting a whole bunch of people fed in a short amount of time.
For events like this where the room is tight I'm shooting with a single 16-55mm lens on my Fuji XT-2. No need for anything longer. I also have a Nissen i60 flash attached that I'm using in TTL mode bounced off the ceiling or wall. I don't usually shoot flash in TTL mode but for events where you have to react quickly it just makes sense. The i60 has a flash compensation dial on the back that you can quickly use to zone in your exposure.
One thing I never do is point a bare flash directly at my subject unless I have a large modifier attached such as an umbrella or softbox. Obviously, for events like this, neither of those is practical so I'm bouncing the flash off the ceiling or wall. The only problem with this venue is that the ceiling has dark wooden molding on it so the light bounced back is a bit warm, but I like that look.
Most of these shots were taken at 1/160 sec. @ f/5.6 at ISO 3200. This got me a darker, but visible, background that I could easily open up in post if necessary.
As I mentioned, this was a really fun night - enthusiastic kids, equally enthusiastic teachers, great DJ, great venue, not to mention ten scholarships given out and a lot of gift baskets raffled off.
