Commack High School Boys Varsity Tennis vs. Elwood/J.Glenn
Finally made it to a tennis match on a relatively mild day. This one had the added benefit of being overcast also, which is not a bad thing for sports photos.
First of all, congratulations to the Commack boys tennis team on their win over Elwood/Glenn. They're on quite a roll.
I've mentioned this before but I much prefer overcast conditions for sports photos. The photos look flat to start out with but it's much easier to add contrast in post than to take it away. Of course, no shoots go perfectly and this one was no exception. The baseball team was playing Connetquot and the field is directly behind the tennis courts. So, not only did I have an assortment of spectators in the background but I had the Connetquot players in their bright red uniforms.
This makes for a rather distracting background and there's little you can do about it when photographing; the courts are where they are. In post-processing, however, you do have some options. First, you can selectively desaturate bright colors (you may notice some baseball players with gray uniforms). Second, if the objects in the background are isolated you can (sometimes) remove them by using various tools in your favorite editing program. Photoshop, for example, has a great content-aware delete feature. You can also use the good old clone stamp tool, or its variants, found in most programs. Naturally, there are images where the background is so complex it would take hours of work to remove the distractions, so these get left as is.
That's it for today. Hoping to get the girls golf team on Friday but the weather looks like it's taking a turn for the worse. We'll see.
