Commack High School Boys Varsity Track vs. Lindenhurst
As you can see from the down parkas worn by the race officials this was really winter track cleverly disguised as spring track. Actually, winter track would have been better because it's inside.
Getting off to a slow start photographing the spring sports season due to the horrible weather conditions so far. At least the weather was sunny for this one; freezing but sunny.
Photographing spring track is fairly straightforward. The movements of the athletes are predictable so the only decision required is where to position yourself. For the long and triple jumps I'm at the end of the strip. For the shorter races and hurdles I'm at the finish line and for the longer races I'm on whichever side of the track I can get the sun on my back. I also try to be nearer the other events such as shot put, pole vault and high jump so I can try to get some of them in also while I'm shooting a longer race.
It's usually impossible to get every event since they're spread out all over the field and, in the case of discus, on an entirely different field. Also, some events may have very few athletes competing and you may not be in the right place at the right time. You just get what you can and hope you can make another meet before the end of the season.
This meet ended early so there were no relays. That's one of my favorite events to shoot but it's probably just as well; by that time I couldn't feel my fingers. Looks like the weather may warm up a bit for the rest of the week. I hope so. Lots of catch up to do.
