Commack High School Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Baldwin - L.I. AA Championship
The Commack girls basketball team's season didn't end the way they would have liked but it did end better than every other girls basketball team in Suffolk county and that says a lot for their teamwork and determination. Congratulations, ladies. It was a lot of fun following them this season.
Back in SCCC Brentwood for this one; my brief gift of bright lights is over (sniff) and it's back to ISO 8,000 reality.
I believe it was a Sports Illustrated editor that said, "There are two things you need in every good sports photo - (1)face, (2)ball". But, do you really always need the ball in the photo? I would say for more than 90% of the photos, yes. The exception is when you can look at the photo and clearly know what's happening without it. For example, in the pregame huddle there's no ball involved for obvious reasons. The same for reactions from the bench, unless you happen to get lucky enough to get a player on the court in front of them.
There are, however, rare instances where photos of players making a shot work even without the ball. Take this shot. The gesture of the player shooting clearly shows she just let the ball go. One of the opposing players is charging her to try for a block. Her teammate and the other opposing player have their eyes on the ball just released. So, there's enough of a story there that the ball is not mandatory. Would it have been nice to have it in the photo? Sure, but the photo still works without it.
That's it for basketball and winter sports in general for this season. Spring sports start next week. Wait, what?
