Commack High School Girls Varsity Volleyball vs. Long Beach - Long Island Championship
The Commack girls volleyball team season ended last night with a loss to Long Beach in the Long Island Championship at Farmingdale University. But Commack finished as AA Suffolk County champions, which is a huge accomplishment considering the other talented schools in the league. They gave me some great photographs and I had a lot of fun photographing them throughout their long season. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on a record season.
Farmingdale’s Nold Athletics Center is a great place to photograph sports. Definitely brighter than the vast majority of venues on the Island. I shot this one at ISO 5000, 1/800 sec. @ f/2.8 using a Fuji XT-2 with a 16-55mm for the wide shots and a Fuji XT-3 with a 50-140mm for the long shots. I took a custom white balance on the floor.
Since the house was packed on either of the long sides of the court, I shot mostly from the net on the long side. This got me some great backgrounds of the enthusiastic crowd as well as the players bench and coaches. I took a few from the short side toward the net but, since those bleachers were vacant and pretty uninteresting, I kept those to a minimum.
Thanks to the great lighting at Farmingdale, I didn’t have to do much to these photos in post except crop them and add a little contrast and some structure.
That’s it for fall sports. Winter sports starts, for me at least, the first week of December. Until that time I’ll try to keep the Instagram account going with more posts.
