Commack High School Girls Varsity Soccer vs. Sachem East
Caught the Commack girls varsity soccer team in a win over Sachem East on Friday. Great match held at the field at Burr Intermediate school.
Soccer is one of those sports that moves fast. For that reason you can't move up and down the field like you can with a sport like football. You'll never be able to keep up with the play. I generally pick out a spot in the corner of the field with the sun at my back and let the play come to me. I stay a bit in front of the goal to get any scoring attempts as well as good saves by the goalie. As long as no team is really dominating the match the play will come to you eventually and you'll be able to get some decent shots.
Photographing soccer, like all fast sports, requires knowledge of the sport and intuition. As a famous sports photographer once said, "If you seen it, you ain't got it". Although he probably wasn't an english major, his advice is sound. By the time you see a play in the viewfinder of your camera it's probably too late to press the shutter button; you missed it. You have to develop a sense of what's coming next and this only comes from taking lots of photos and keeping your head in the game. I find this tends to improve as the game goes on; my photos are usually better in the second half. You just start to get into a rhythm. Keep at it.
