Commack High School Girls Varsity Cross Country
Finally finished the Commack girls cross country photos. I photographed the start of their race back on the same day I photographed the boys but miscalculated the time it would take for them to finish so I was unable to get to my usual position on the road near the finish line in time. So... I went back on Tuesday to get the rest of the shots. I ended up reshooting the start on the first bridge so if you see the same Commack athletes running with different opposing schools you're not going crazy.
You can tell the weather was different on the two days I took these images; the first day was slightly overcast and Tuesday was bright and sunny. Just looking at the shadows on the bridge will give you a hint. The photos taken Tuesday are a lot more contrasty compared with the first meet. That's why I love to shoot under slightly overcast conditions - better light and way less post-processing.
One quick tip that applies to shooting cross country and track, and also many other sports - you want to try to get opposing athletes in the photo, preferably behind your subject in the case of cross country. If not, it looks like the photo could have been taken at a practice, which it could have. This is not always possible since some runners will break away from the pack, but if you can do it it will make the photo look much more "authentic".
