Commack High School Girls Varsity Soccer vs. North Babylon - Playoff
Congratulations to the Commack girls soccer team on their win against North Babylon in the first playoff game.
For this second half of this playoff game I moved to the east end of the field, which is something I don't usually do when it's sunny out. This puts the sun at the players' backs and puts their faces in the shade. Backlighting your subject can make for a nice photo but requires some additional post-processing work. But, since most of the action in this game was at the North Babylon goal, it was either move to that goal or stand around waiting at the Commack goal.
When I have players with the sun at their backs I'm basically using the same exposure setting as with the sun in their faces but I open up the shadows in post. This way, I'm not blowing out the backs of the player that are in the sunlight. This is especially important since the Commack players have white uniforms; if both teams have darker uniforms you might consider increasing your exposure. Lightening shadows can make photos look a bit flat but there's not much of a choice. You can only increase the highlights so much without blowing them out and you don't want to darken the shadows because that would include their faces. Sometimes you might be able to get some definition back by increasing the clarity slightly.
One more thing you may want to do with late afternoon games in sunlight is to reduce the orange saturation. Most players' skin tones will be very orange due to the warmth of the sunlight. You may or may not like this effect. I tend to dial it back a bit by lowering the orange saturation.
That's it for today. Another playoff game this afternoon.
